August 4, 2010 - Like most Americans, you probably spend more than 50 hours a year grocery shopping but little of that time paying attention to labels. No worries! FITNESS magazine did the work for you, consulting a panel of top nutritionists for what’s best in terms of calories, fat, fiber, sodium. Now, with 55 of the most delicious, healthiest picks from the grocery shelves, Fitness magazine presents their 4th Annual Healthy Food Awards.
More than one hundred companies submitted their healthiest products, and the panel spent hours analyzing the nutrition facts and ingredients in each to determine which deserved a place in the taste tests. The finalists were then sampled and voted on by dozens of staffers throughout FITNESS.
Sara Wells, Nutrition Editor of FITNESS magazine shares the results of the 4th Annual Healthy Food Awards, which features the “best of the best” from the fridge to the freezer to the pantry – everything from snacks, drinks and even desserts to keep your body happy and healthy!
From Best in Pantry, we have Pepperidge Farm Whole Grain Double Fiber Soft 100% Whole Wheat Bread. It’s cholesterol free, trans fat free, and certified by the American Heart Association. With six grams of fiber per slice and only 100 calories per slice, it's perfect for sandwiches or toast.
From Best in Fridge, we have Wholly Guacamole Pico de Gallo Style. It’s all natural, preservative free guacamole and is hand scooped with chunks of ripe avocados with pico de gallo mixed in for an added kick. It’s dipping perfection at only 45 calories for every 2 tablespoons. You can find it in the produce section refrigerated shelves.
From Best in Drinks, we have R. W. Knudsen Family Organic Lemon Sparkling Essence. It has zero calories and no sugar for a guilt-free beverage. Essences are a simple combination of sparkling spring water infused with organic ingredients. We love the organic lemon.
From Best in Snacks, what could be better than peanut butter covered in a 100% pure milk chocolate? Dove Silky Smooth Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Singles Bars taste so delicious and decadent but at 180 calories for every 5 pieces, it is guilt-free indulgence!
Another favorite is Pepperidge Farm Gingerman Homestyle Cookies. They have just the right amount of ginger without being overpowering and the crunchy cookies feel like a big treat. They only have 130 calories for 4 cookies!
And from Best in Frozen Desserts, we couldn’t resist Del Monte Freeze & Eat Tubes Strawberry Snow Storm. Our staff just loved their berry flavor. Each package has 1 pound of fruit and they don’t have any artificial flavors or corn syrup, which is great. They’re a great source of vitamin C and at only 55 calories per tube, you and your kids will love them.
